2007-8: NBA 17,396, NHL 17,268 (difference of 1%)
2006-7: NBA 17,767, NHL 16,964 (difference of 5%)
2005-6: NBA 17,548, NHL 16,955 (difference of 3%)
2004-5: NBA 17,314, NHL (no season)
2003-4: NBA 17,130, NHL 16,538 (difference of 4%)
2002-3: NBA 16,883, NHL 16,592 (difference of 2%)

I'd say is fairly popular, NHL probably is more.

Well, first off, the AHL is composed of the minor teams for the teams of the NHL. For example, the Chicago Wolves (AHL) r the minor team to the Atlanta Thrashers (NHL)
So, the NHL is more popular than the AHL by quite a bit.
The AHL is used for players to develop, & as an extra league for players & fans to have.
I'd say the NHl gets twice the attention of the AHL, but still the AHL is getting more popular these days.

NHL is much much bigger. The AHL are the minor league teams for the NHL teams for the most part people do not care as much about the AHL teams unless you live near one and in that case they are a blast to watch.

Not as popular but an opportunity for fans to get a little more up close with the future NHL stars to come. Also a chance to see an NHL star who may be doing a rehab stint

The AHL is popular for the reason that the players have a very good chance of being on their affiliate is NHL roster someday. l know people who follow the AHL closely just to see how certain players develop and move up to the NHL.
