I've been a hockey fan for years and I've finally decided to start playing, along with a few of my friends.l am playing goalie, and after a few outings, l can usually do a decent job during open hockey pick-up games. But l have a question. How is a goalies supposed to move laterally?I've heard references to the ''goalie shuffle.''Do l just sidestep?Because there seems to be no way to skate sideways without turning to and angle from the puck, which is bad. l mean specifically when the puck is moving around far out from the crease.Up close, l am usually in the butterfly and just push sideways. l am in goalie skates, though l think they were sharpened too deep. Yeah, it seems my problem is that my skates are sharpened too deeply and I am not a good enough skater. Thanks everyone!

if your moving left, keep ur left foot on the ice and push off in short little strides (your skates have to be dull enough though)

It takes technique, practise and being a good skater .. something else to keep in mind - Are you in goalie or player skates?

im assuming ice..first off the skates, goalie skates should be sharpened very frequently, preferable every other ice time, they r sharpened differently than player skates..players r sharpend to the point so the blade is like a V, a goalie skate has concaved, so it is kinda like an upside down U
next, the shuffle is simple left to write, if u shuffle left, leave the left foot on the ice, & simply push yourself with ur right foot, u will be transferring some weight to ur right foot for balance,
another is t-push, this is when if moving left, rotate ur left foot 90 degrees, toes pointing the direction u wish to go, this is so ur left & right foot produce a T like shape, u simply use ur straight leg to push, much easier, this is used when the play is not a threat, top of the blue line, neutral zone, etc
another way is a power slide, when moving left, while in the butterfly u lift ur right leg so ur skate blade is on the ground, & u push yourself while still in a half butterfly
if u r new to goaltending, especially hockey, it is very difficult to get the hang of all this, all it takes is practice practice practice.that is why goalie clinics r so popular..
hope this helps
